day had turned to night quicker than anticipated, a memo of retrieving something from his penthouse popping into his mind after a long day of scuttling about with stormy, the duo helping each other with their problems in quick succession.

an offer was presented to accompany him in order to retrieve said item before they went to fetch dinner, one taken; which would soon be regretted.

idle chatter that once filled the confines of the elevator was cut short, a malfunction stopping the lift in place.

silence would overtake the two for a moment before their struggle began, a call for help unanswered as well as attempts made to pry themselves out being in vain. they were as stuck as stuck could be until help had arrived.

a sigh escaped kim as he leaned against the railing within the elevator.

“i guess we should make ourselves comfortable for a bit… sorry i dragged you along for this.”

Stormy breathed a long, tired sigh as she pressed her knuckles into her lower back, arching herself backwards to stretch out her cramped muscles. It had been a long, long day of running around doing errands. She was beat, and more than ready to settle in for a nice dinner and go to sleep later.[break][break]

When Kim had asked her to come along with him for one last thing, she had been ready to turn him down, to insist it was time for her to rest her leg and get some rest. That ship sailed though the moment he offered up food. If they were going out for dinner later anyways, what was the harm in one extra stop along the way?[break][break]

Besides, it wasn't like Stormy was good at saying no to Kim Cole.[break][break]

Her hands rested on the cold metal of the elevator as it began to move. She wasn't much for the feeling of her stomach moving around in her body, so she tended to hold on tight. Unfortunately, the lurch soon turned disastrous as the elevator stopped entirely. [break][break]

There was a moment of silence between the two, their idle conversation cut short at the sudden change in mood. Stormy was also not one for cramped spaces, and was beginning to feel panicked just sitting there. She looked to Kim as he began to shout for help, and she couldn't help but press the emergency button a few too many times.[break][break]

"U-uh.. okay. I guess. Don't worry about it, it's fine."[break][break]

Though it certainly didn't sound fine though, as she white-knuckled the rail and tried not to panic.

his eyes would settle on stormy, a somewhat worried look on his face as she stumbled on her words. it looked like she was not in the slightest a fan of this situation.

he could understand that, it wasn’t something favorable for either of them. but she seemed to be taking this harder than him, in fact, she looked about ready to panic.

that wouldn’t do, the last thing he wanted was for her to go into a stupor from fear or otherwise.

“stormy, relax, i’m sure it won’t be long before we get out of here. just… pace your breathing for now.”

he’d give an example, slowly breathing in then exhaling just as slowly, prompting for her to follow in the steps given.

Stormy was claustrophobic. Short visits in cramped spaces were fine because normally they were short-lived. However, the moment the elevator hitched and came to a dead stop, with no intention of letting her out, her heart had begun to race.[break][break]

Not only that, but the situation had become much worse with Kim being the person she was locked in with.[break][break]

They had been doing a dance ever since their discussion on the field a couple days ago. They had come to a disagreement and left their conversation unfinished. It had been awkward, considering neither of them had brought up the elephant in the room.[break][break]

Kim attempts to calm her down, giving her direction to slow her breathing down and concentrate on the present.[break][break]

She does as she's told, her knuckles turning white as she shakily sucked in deep breaths and released slowly, trying to calm herself down.[break][break]

"I'm sorry."

he understood her unease. not only were they trapped in here, but their shuffling around a certain subject kept it heavy in the air, causing the environment to be covered in a mist of awkwardness.

though it stayed on his mind, he refused to show his stress outwardly, putting up the front that everything was fine until he found the opportunity to speak his words freely.

“it’s okay, you didn’t do anything wrong.”

his words felt ironic given his current thought process.

“but… since we’re here, and there’s no real way of gauging how long we will be… let's talk about something…”

he figured she knew exactly what that something was about, but he’d give her one last look.

“are you okay with that?”

Oh, but she had done something wrong. [break][break]

And it's that truth, a truth that hasn't been told, that she's been hiding from him, that's the reason she's saying sorry.[break][break]

Stormy feels all of the warmth rush out of her cheeks, she feels her fingers grow numb - but that's probably due to how tightly she's holding the rail. She releases her iron grip, flexing her fingers and sucking air between her teeth at the pain of it.[break][break]

"I'm sorry for not explaining everything to you the moment I came home, Kim."[break][break]

She nods in affirmation to his 'are you okay with that?'[break][break]

Deep down she knows she isn't, that she hasn't prepared for this conversation. She has nothing to hide, but it doesn't make explaining it any easier. She's afraid, because she know that what happened that night was wrong - that the whole situation had gone completely sideways.[break][break]

the emotions she felt were not shared, kim feeling right in himself more than anything in this moment.

though there were doubts to begin with, they were masked perfectly, any second guesses in himself fleeing his body as he spoke.

he’d take a deep breath, exhaling lightly, looking to stormy.

“we’ll start where we left off.”

the memory of the events were burned into his mind, an unscratchable itch gnawing at the back of his head with each reminder.

“i was saying something along the lines of ‘this isn’t just about me being your friend’ and ended it there right?”

“i’ll finish that thought then.”

he would hate himself for saying this but he feels it necessary to give her a reminder of their jobs.

“i might be your friend stormy, but i’m also your superior, and if you fail to give me any information about the missions you went on, especially one as important as this one, i will bring this friendship to a halt on terms of professionalism.”

he hated saying anything even dealing with failed friendships, a sting reminding him of past events left undisclosed, but there was a line when it came to how formal two can be with one another when in their positions.

There was the unmistakable pit of dread in her belly as Kim repeated the same words he had spoken that day in the field. She had been uneasy then, but it was magnified now.[break][break]

'This isn't just about me being your friend.'[break][break]

Stormy winces as if he's struck her physically. She's always been careful to keep their relationship professional, but she's always considered him a close friend. The fact he was bringing up his superiority now was just a slap in the face.[break][break]

A powerful reminder that his trust in her was.. temporary, or maybe she was just being dramatic and critical.[break][break]

"It feels like you already have, Kim."[break][break]

Her voice is weak, and she almost regrets saying those words. It's unfair of her to assume he wouldn't put his job before her. She's a civillian in comparison to him, a nobody.[break][break]

Stormy takes a deep breath to steady the earthquake in her bones, to try and come to terms with what she's about to unload on him.[break][break]

"I didn't mean to hurt anyone. We went into enemy territory knowing that we could be killed, but we were there to rescue Dahlia. Those men, the men you saw us take down - they came at us first. We were moving swiftly and they found us, they sent their Pokemon on us. We reacted to protect ourselves, my Pokemon did what they had to do to protect me."[break][break]

Her breathing increases, taking in shallower breaths as she recounts the fateful day.[break][break]

"They nearly crippled me. I-I saw one of them reach for their radio. Maybe we should have stopped - should have interrogated them or thought about it harder. But we thought we were in a war, Kim. This is war, isn't it?"[break][break]

Stormy's hands are shaking, and try as she might to clench them still, they won't stop.[break][break]

"We all reacted to protect ourselves, we weren't going to leave anyone behind. I asked Skarmory to stop them from calling for reinforcements - because that's what I thought they were going to do. Why would two innocent men be in the belly of Rocket-controlled territory? Why would they attack us, unprovoked?"[break][break]

There's disbelief in her eyes. She's trying to rationalize it.[break][break]

"Skarmory made a mistake, I think we all did. We're all paying the price. Maybe those two men were innocent. But I saw them attack us first. I swear, Kim, I didn't try to hurt anyone. I was protecting my team. I was--"[break][break]

It's possible she's holding back sobs. Silent tears stream down her cheeks as she maintains control of her voice. She has to be stronger than this.[break][break]

"I didn't kill them. That.. that was one of the other officers. My Chandelure was nowhere near that fight. She did nothing wrong, that wasn't her."

her words stung, but little more than a joltiks peck. he kept his composure, refusing to falter the poker face he held.

until she continued further on.

his brows arched down slightly with each paragraph, her words spewing out like an unsupervised fire hydrant; further claims of her innocence unneeded on both their parts.

“stormy…”

his call was unanswered, she opted to instead continue her tirade of words.

“stormy…!”

still, she furthered on, his frustration rising.

“stormy.”

where was all of this when he needed it, when it really mattered? why wasn’t she this compliment when blame was juggled back and forth, why did it take a situation like this for her truth to spill.

“stormy!”

it doesn’t matter anymore, what's done is done. what matters is how she can better herself and prevent these actions in the future.

“i’ve never been in your shoes stormy, so i don’t know how it feels to be in your situation, but i do know that people in our positions have to think of the right thing to do in general rather than what's the right thing to do for us. you should know that your duty comes before anything.”

fingers gripped in on themselves, bracing for the words soon to come.

“you don’t know how much i wanted nothing to do with you after hearing about what happened. i thought you were guilty of a crime you didn’t commit because you withheld information. and with as many fingers that pointed at you as there were, it was hard to defend you. but i did, because i knew you wouldn’t do something like that.”

he’d pull his hair back, an exasperated sigh leaving his body as he neared her, his expression softening..

“i let my emotions get the better of me that day in the field, but i’ve always had faith in and trusted you stormy, i always will. so i don’t think it would be too much to ask for you to do the same for me. i’ll always be there for you when you need me to.”

she may be high in ranking but she is still a rookie, he couldn’t bring himself to fault her anymore for something she didn’t know how to properly handle.

instinctively, he’d reach out, pulling her into his embrace, a hand gently caressing the head which he rested on his chest.

“we all make mistakes stormy, but you learned something from it, no need to beat yourself up about it any longer.”

She could hear him calling out her name, but the flow of words wouldn't allow her to stop. It's probably the first time she's worded the incident out loud - the first time she's been honest with herself about what happened.[break][break]

There had been a reason she was so afraid to speak up. The scrutinizing stares, the whispers behind her back. The fact that Fernando had looked down on her already with such disgust as if she were worthless. It had all started to get to her, a constant reminder that she was weak and no one would believe her.[break][break]

So, when she had finally found the courage, and the dam burst and her words tumbled out like a wave of pain and fear, it felt good. She suddenly felt overwhelmed with grief and regret, regret that she hadn't stepped in, hadn't stopped them. But also that she hadn't told Kim sooner.[break][break]

There are rivers of tears staining her cheeks as she takes in a couple of shaky breaths to steady herself. She's forcing herself to be strong, to remain calm. [break][break]

It hurts to hear Kim tell her the truth of it all, that she had been stupid to keep the truth from him. She had been recovering, remembering, taking in all of the information and compartmentalizing it. She had been struggling to recall what the fuck happened out there, and it had taken a selfishly long time. She had been afraid.[break][break]

Under her breath, a constant stream of apologies slips out while Kim resumes speaking. His reassuring and comforting words sting, because she probably doesn't deserve them. She's been selfish and stupid.[break][break]

"I'm sorry Kim, I'm so, so sorry. I felt like I was drowning with the pressure of what I knew. With so many fingers pointing at me, how was I supposed to combat them all, to speak out and protect myself? I'm nobody, Kim. It felt like my word would mean nothing."[break][break]

His arms reach around her, pulling her in close. She doesn't fight it, because she needs comfort. Her head rests on his chest, and she allows one sob to escape her chest, the lodge in her throat becoming too heavy to keep down. [break][break]

"I'm sorry."
